Herreshoff’s “Doris”

Built in 1905, the stunning 76-foot sloop (later ketch) “Doris” (aka Vayu, Huntress, Astarte) is the largest all-wood sailboat ever built by the Herreshoff Mfg. Company. It has been languishing in a boat yard in New London CT for 30 years and was scheduled to be scrapped at the end of August 2013, but was given a one-year lease on life through Snediker Yacht Restoration of Pawcatuck until a new owner could be found.  Now, thanks to a generous and enthusiastic client, DORIS has been saved.  The restoration, a 5 year + project, bringing her back to original specifications will be the largest ever undertaken by Snediker Yacht Restoration.  A feature documentary following her restoration is currently under way.

Even now, she is work of art. Thank you for the interest you bring to the vessel.

Thank you! And yes, she is. I’m currently in post-production for a short documentary about her. It should be released around the beginning of September. Stay tuned to this website for information.

Hello. My father, James Mercanti previously owned the Doris or the Vayu as we knew it. We grew up on “the boat” as my father still refers to it, and have lots of fond memories. I have some information that I would be happy to share with you.
Please contact me if you wish. Thank you.

  • Very happy to see that everything is underway. Liz
